Renting a Car at Tunis-Carthage Airport (TUN): 2026 Guide

How to hire a car at Tunis-Carthage Airport (TUN) in 2026: prices from ~€95 for 3 days, meet-and-greet pickup, no credit card deposit, and driving tips for Tunis, Sidi Bou Said and beyond.

Renting a Car at Tunis-Carthage Airport (TUN): 2026 Guide

Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN) is Tunisia's main entry point and sits just 8 km from the centre of the capital. Whether you're here for the medina and the Bardo Museum, a coastal escape to Sidi Bou Said and Carthage, or using Tunis as a base to drive south, a rental car picked up at the airport is the simplest way to start. Here's how it works in 2026.

Prices at Tunis-Carthage

Local rates start from around 324 TND (about €95) for 3 days on an economy car with unlimited mileage — roughly €32 a day, and cheaper per day on a week-long hire. As at every Tunisian airport, the difference from the international franchises isn't only the headline rate: it's the absence of a €900–1,200 credit-card hold and the option to pay on arrival in cash or by card.

Airport pickup

Book online with your flight number and an agent meets you at arrivals with a name board. The flight is tracked, so a late landing doesn't cost you the car. If you'd rather not drive straight out of a busy airport into Tunis traffic, choose delivery to your hotel instead and start fresh the next morning.

Driving in and around Tunis

Tunis traffic is the busiest in the country — lane discipline is loose and roundabouts are assertive, so a night arrival is a good reason to take hotel delivery and start driving rested. Once you're out of the centre it's straightforward:

  • Sidi Bou Said & Carthage — the blue-and-white clifftop village and the Roman ruins, 25–30 min along the coast (the TGM area).
  • La Marsa & Gammarth — beaches and seafront restaurants north of the city.
  • The Bardo Museum — one of the world's great mosaic collections, in the western suburbs.
  • Hammamet — the classic beach resort, about 1h south on the A1 motorway.
  • Dougga — spectacular Roman ruins, about 1h45 west, an easy self-drive day trip that's awkward without a car.

The A1 motorway runs south toward Sousse and Sfax and is well worth the small toll. Keep your passport, licence and rental contract handy for the routine police checkpoints.

Licence and documents

Your national licence is accepted for a tourist visit if valid and in the Latin alphabet; an International Driving Permit is a sensible backup. Bring your passport and your payment card or cash.
